Ever claim to be \u201cjonesing\u201d for a cheeseburger or a soda, or admit that you needed to get your daily french fry \u201cfix\u201d? Food addiction may sound light and funny, like a harmless cousin to more serious drug, alcohol, and behavioral addictions. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/how-to-overcome-food-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food addiction can be just as serious.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recovery.org\/forums\/discussion\/8695\/effects-of-food-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it can have other serious effects on mental and emotional health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, evidence suggests that food addiction is very common. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25338274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey of past studies <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) suggests that as many as 20% of people may have a food addiction. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25692302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also using YFAS, measured the addictiveness of different foods. The findings confirmed that the most addictive foods were heavily processed foods with more fat and sugar. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The 10 Most Addictive Foods<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to participants in the study, who rated a wide range of commonly loved foods, the 10 most addictive foods were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pizza<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schokolade <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chips <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cookies <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice cream <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French fries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheeseburgers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soda (not diet)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cake<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K\u00e4se<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also near the top: Bacon, fried chicken, plain rolls, buttered popcorn, breakfast cereal, gummy candy, steak, and muffins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Resist Food Addiction<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food addiction, like any addiction, has to do with your body chemistry and your brain. Not only are the foods above tasty and fun to eat, they also trigger massive sugar imbalances in your blood and dopamine reactions in your brain\u2014two factors linked with food and other addictions. You get a short-term reward, frequently followed by a hollow feeling and craving for more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution? Eat more whole, single-ingredient foods.
