That\u2019s not cheerful news, but it\u2019s an important point for protecting the vulnerable among us: The virus is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/coronavirus-transmission-overview#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spreading, in all the same ways<\/a> we learned about months ago, and the same people are at increased risk.<\/p>\n<p>Although a false sense of security may arise from seeing people dining in restaurants and celebrating in pools, we\u2019re still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/05\/28\/upshot\/coronavirus-herd-immunity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a long way from reaching herd immunity<\/a>. In the meantime, many people are considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/05\/17\/857531803\/the-pros-and-cons-of-social-bubbles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social bubbles, or pods,<\/a> to make isolation more pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning to create a limited-contact circle, remember that the following individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">face greater risk<\/a> of complications from COVID-19, meaning that you\u2019ll want to take extra care with the precautions you take to protect those with whom you have regular contact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Immunocompromised individuals, such as those who\u2019ve had organ transplants or have cancer, HIV, a genetic immune disorder, and those who take immunosuppressant medications.<\/li>\n<li>Older adults; <a href=\"https:\/\/elemental.medium.com\/its-not-just-sick-old-people-who-die-from-covid-19-bc9251989bc8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">almost 70% of deaths<\/a> from COVID-19 in the United States are people who are aged 65 or older.<\/li>\n<li>People with asthma, liver disease, diabetes, or dementia face more severe complications from the virus.<\/li>\n<li>Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses in general, and that includes COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone who is severely obese (BMI 40+) will likelier experience more\u2014and more extreme\u2014symptoms of the virus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep in mind, too, that many people remain asymptomatic even though they have the virus. That doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t spread it. Whether or not you have symptoms, just breathing puts the virus out into the air, and as many as 80% of transmissions come from asymptomatic carriers.
