The Caring Community\u00a0Partners team of nine\u00a0volunteers prepared for over a\u00a0year to serve on this medical\u00a0missions trip to Machilipatnam. \u00a0This was the fifth trip to India\u00a0that the hospital has made.\u00a0Veterans like Marc Petrey and\u00a0Dee Ann Nicholson served as\u00a0the mentors and leaders of the\u00a0team, and Carol Petrey was\u00a0appointed as the spiritual\u00a0leader. The new members of the\u00a0team were Dr. Kristin\u00a0Charpentier, Sarah LaScuola,\u00a0Aynslee Johnson, my husband,\u00a0Henry Schmidt and me. All of\u00a0us were out of our comfort\u00a0zone, but willing to serve with\u00a0an open heart.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Having been to Haiti and\u00a0Africa, I thought I knew what\u00a0to expect with this trip. I was\u00a0not prepared for the two long\u00a0days of travel, but I also wasn\u2019t\u00a0prepared for such a warm\u00a0greeting by our hosts, the Pauls. \u00a0We have developed a strong\u00a0rapport with the family, and\u00a0many past members of the team\u00a0have seen incredible growth\u00a0over the years, especially in the\u00a0nursing school. What once was\u00a0a concrete foundation that\u00a0Marc and other CCP members\u00a0helped to build, is now a finished\u00a0hallway with rooms that are\u00a0ready to house nursing\u00a0students. The hospital itself has\u00a0designated an OR, a lab\u00a0drawing room, and an\u00a0unfinished second floor that\u00a0will eventually serve as an\u00a0inpatient unit.Each village we visited\u00a0consisted of an established\u00a0church where we would set up\u00a0our medical camps. The\u00a0medical camps consisted of a\u00a0triage, multiple provider areas,\u00a0and a pharmacy. An interpreter\u00a0was assigned to each provider\u2019s\u00a0station, and Marc and Henry\u00a0served as \u201ctraffic control\u201d to\u00a0help keep people in line and\u00a0lighten the mood with fist\u00a0bumps; they caught on fast and\u00a0brought a smile to people\u2019s\u00a0faces. No matter the reason a\u00a0person was there, they always\u00a0smiled. Some of them walked\u00a0for miles to see us, and many\u00a0times I couldn\u2019t communicate\u00a0with them, other than offering a smile back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Their ailments\u00a0ranged from neck, back and leg\u00a0pain, to cataracts, to wounds\u00a0and high\u00a0blood pressure. But\u00a0for every new hardship comes\u00a0an even greater reward. And for\u00a0each small obstacle we\u00a0encountered came an even\u00a0greater outpouring of love from\u00a0the children, the people we\u00a0served, and the Paul family\u00a0themselves.<\/p>\n<p>By far, my favorite memory was\u00a0my birthday. Gretchen Pike can\u00a0vouch for me when I say that it\u00a0is a humbling experience to\u00a0have children from the NACEA\u00a0school sing to you. The Pauls\u00a0presented me with a cake, and\u00a0I received birthday wishes from\u00a0each boy and girl I took vital\u00a0signs on that day.<\/p>\n<p>A unique\u00a0challenge on this trip was the\u00a0opportunity to teach to the\u00a0pastors and teachers of the\u00a0villages that the Pauls have\u00a0started. Such simple classes on\u00a0diabetic care and hand hygiene\u00a0have the potential to make a\u00a0tremendous difference in the\u00a0lives of the Indian people. Marc\u00a0was able to demonstrate the\u00a0Heimlich maneuver, which\u00a0brought a lot of laughter to the\u00a0class; and Dr. Charpentier\u2019s\u00a0information on diabetes\u00a0sparked such a curiosity in her\u00a0students that she stayed for\u00a0hours to answer their questions. \u00a0Each of us was able to bring\u00a0skills with us and represent\u00a0CCP in a way that made a\u00a0lasting impression.<\/p>\n<p>As Caring Community\u00a0Partners continues to grow, so\u00a0does its\u00a0established ties halfway\u00a0around the world. So far, we\u00a0have donated thousands of\u00a0dollars to support the nursing\u00a0school and other endeavors\u00a0relevant to the work that the\u00a0Pauls are doing. We are also\u00a0making plans to commit to\u00a0serve in India every other year. \u00a0What better way to experience\u00a0another culture than to\u00a0immerse yourself in the heart\u00a0of its people?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February marked the beginning\u00a0of an unforgettable journey to\u00a0the Andhra Pradesh region of\u00a0India.
