Todo empez\u00f3 con la energ\u00eda volc\u00e1nica<\/strong> <\/h2>\n<\/div>

Los cient\u00edficos no pueden viajar en el tiempo, por lo que deben idear teor\u00edas sobre por qu\u00e9 las masas de tierra de la Tierra se encuentran en sus ubicaciones actuales y c\u00f3mo se formaron. La mayor\u00eda de los cient\u00edficos creen que las masas de tierra se formaron en la Tierra hace miles de millones de a\u00f1os. Aproximadamente 70-80% de la corteza terrestre est\u00e1 formada por granito, que los cient\u00edficos creen que se produce por estas r\u00e1pidas erupciones y su posterior enfriamiento. Estas gigantescas losas de roca que se formaron no permanecieron en su lugar, sino que se desplazaron entre s\u00ed, algo que los cient\u00edficos han denominado teor\u00eda de la tect\u00f3nica de placas. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Imag\u00ednese c\u00f3mo se ve el mundo hoy. Parece que todas las masas terrestres y continentes se encuentran en una ubicaci\u00f3n estable, aunque cambian ligeramente cada a\u00f1o. La tect\u00f3nica de placas es responsable de los terremotos y de lo que caus\u00f3 la formaci\u00f3n de una masa de tierra gigante, llamada Pangea, hace millones de a\u00f1os, as\u00ed como su separaci\u00f3n en todas las diferentes masas de tierra que vemos hoy en el globo. La Tierra no siempre ha tenido el aspecto que tiene ahora. Cuando se formaron las masas de tierra por primera vez, el clima de la Tierra era en general m\u00e1s c\u00e1lido, creando literalmente un semillero para que surgieran todo tipo de especies de plantas y animales. Pero, debido a que el clima cambia naturalmente con el tiempo, nuestra Tierra finalmente comenz\u00f3 a enfriarse y comenz\u00f3 lo que ahora conocemos como la Edad del Hielo. Fue entonces cuando los glaciares, o masas de tierra gigantes hechas de hielo, cubrieron grandes porciones del mundo.  <\/p>\n<\/div>

Pero la \u201cEdad de Hielo\u201d no significa que toda la Tierra estuvo fr\u00eda todo el tiempo. En cambio, el clima cambi\u00f3 entre per\u00edodos de tiempo glaciales e interglaciares. Cuando los glaciares eran m\u00e1s prominentes, se mov\u00edan por las latitudes norte\u00f1as de la Tierra, creando diferentes masas de tierra como valles, formaciones rocosas gigantes y morrenas. Durante los per\u00edodos interglaciares, por otro lado, el clima de la Tierra era como el clima actual. De hecho, algunos cient\u00edficos plantean la hip\u00f3tesis de que todav\u00eda estamos experimentando la Edad del Hielo<\/a> \u00a1y que hoy simplemente estamos en un per\u00edodo interglacial! <\/p>\n<\/div>

El \u00faltimo per\u00edodo glacial de la Edad del Hielo termin\u00f3 en Indiana hace apenas 15.000 a\u00f1os. A medida que los glaciares se formaron y se movieron, moldearon el paisaje de Indiana de maneras significativas, aplanando colinas, enterrando r\u00edos, excavando nuevos lagos y formando montones de rocas llamadas morrenas.
