Other names for this type of medicine are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Angiotensin receptor blockers.<\/li>\n<li>Angiotensin II receptor blockers.<\/li>\n<li>ARBs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Angiotensin is a chemical in the body that narrows the blood vessels. When blood vessels are narrow, blood pressure can go up.<\/p>\n<p>ARBs stop the action of angiotensin 2. So the veins and arteries in the body relax. This lowers blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Several ARBs are available. Which one is best for you depends on your health and the condition being treated.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of ARBs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Azilsartan (Edarbi).<\/li>\n<li>Candesartan (Atacand).<\/li>\n<li>Irbesartan (Avapro).<\/li>\n<li>Losartan (Cozaar).<\/li>\n<li>Olmesartan (Benicar).<\/li>\n<li>Telmisartan (Micardis).<\/li>\n<li>Valsartan (Diovan).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ARBs are used to lower blood pressure. But they also may prevent, treat, or improve symptoms in people who have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic kidney disease.<\/li>\n<li>Heart failure.<\/li>\n<li>Kidney failure due to diabetes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Possible side effects of ARBs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dizziness.<\/li>\n<li>Too much potassium in the blood.<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the skin due to extra fluid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some people taking the angiotensin 2 receptor blocker olmesartan have reported digestive problems. Talk with your healthcare team if you have severe diarrhea or lose a lot of weight while taking this medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t take ARBs if you&#8217;re pregnant or you plan to become pregnant.
