September 7, 2019, is a day Sherry Edon will never forget. That was the day Sherry, who works in nutritional services at Hancock Regional Hospital, received her Stage 0 breast cancer diagnosis \u2014 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).<\/p>\n

Within 30 minutes of Sherry\u2019s initial mammogram, the staff at James T. Anderson, MD, Centre pour la sant\u00e9 des femmes<\/a> ordered a 3D mammogram for a closer look. The nurse practitioner who gave Sherry her diagnosis quickly called Hancock\u2019s renowned breast surgeon Dr. Timothy Goedde<\/a> about scheduling Sherry\u2019s surgery. But Dr. Goedde was on vacation for another week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe nurses saw that I was anxious about waiting,\u201d Sherry said. \u201cSo, they set up a meeting with oncologist Dr. Julia Compton, who assured me that the cancer wouldn\u2019t spread that quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Compton also shared Sherry\u2019s fears and anxieties with Dr. Goedde: \u201cHe texted me, telling me that I was going to be okay,\u201d Sherry said, fighting back tears. \u201cHe said he would meet with me right when he got back. It really meant a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Radiation began as soon as Sherry healed from her biopsy. She remembers crying when she first saw the bed that was waiting for her in the radiation room. A friend gave Sherry a wooden cross when she learned of her diagnosis. \u201cI held it so tight during radiation that I could hardly let go when it was over,\u201d Sherry said.<\/p>\n

Sherry credits her family for giving her strength throughout her treatment. \u201cThe day of my biopsy,\u201d she said, \u201cmy daughter Caitlin met me there with shirts that said \u2018Stronger with cancer\u2019 and \u2018I walk for my mom.\u2019 My children are my biggest supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherry says it has been smooth sailing since her surgery. Her pathology report came back negative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live life to the fullest,\u201d she said of her post-treatment outlook. \u201cI thank God each day.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she encourages others her age to make sure they do everything they can to have that same opportunity. She nearly missed hers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had accidentally skipped my appointment the year before,\u201d she said. If friends hadn\u2019t pushed me, I may not have gone for another year, and the cancer might have spread.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t delay the mammogram.\u201d<\/p>\n
