That\u2019s the look of out-of-season produce. Not that they\u2019re not any good for you, but they may have lost nutrients due to transportation and forced ripening.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there are plenty of great fruits and vegetables that are in season during the winter. Some may be familiar, some not so much. But they\u2019re all great ways to freshen your meal options for the season.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Choux de Bruxelles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite looking like immature cabbages, Brussels sprouts want you to know that they are very much their own vegetable. But they do belong to the cabbage family, along with broccoli, kale, and kohlrabi, and other favorites of kids everywhere (yes, we\u2019re being somewhat tongue-in-cheek here). And <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brussels_sprout#Nutrients,_phytochemicals_and_research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they\u2019re rich in vitamins C and K<\/a> (a blood coagulating agent, which makes Brussels sprouts not the best choice for those taking some blood-thinning medications).<\/p>\n<p>If you grew up despising boiled and soggy Brussels sprouts, you should give them another try in their roasted or grilled form. They\u2019re absolutely delicious with a little balsamic vinegar, as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/recipes\/ina-garten\/balsamic-roasted-brussels-sprouts-recipe-1996813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this Barefoot Contessa recipe<\/a>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Citrus Fruit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For those who find winter a bit dreary, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.florida-citrus.com\/cnseason.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">citrus season<\/a> is one sure sign that someone up there likes us. Oranges, clementines, grapefruit, lemons, and limes have the power to brighten and sweeten even the grayest days, and they\u2019re all great sources of vitamin C, which is essential for health and a powerful antioxidant.<\/p>\n<p>While many of us enjoy oranges and grapefruit in juice form, whole fruits offer the most nutritional benefit while containing less sugar. Many citrus fruits are delicious on their own, but make an intriguing addition to many recipes, such as this <a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/recipe\/236475\/sweet-and-spicy-salmon-with-grapefruit-salsa\/?internalSource=hub%20recipe&amp;referringId=1297&amp;referringContentType=recipe%20hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">salmon with grapefruit salsa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Collard Greens<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Collard greens are a southern and soul food staple in the U.S., and they\u2019ve been enjoyed around the world since the time of the ancient Greeks, with good reason. They\u2019re delicious, nutritious, and high in lots of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, iron, and manganese. They\u2019re astonishingly high in vitamin K (so, again, those on anti-coagulants should use caution).<\/p>\n<p>Collard greens are often cooked with smoked pork or turkey, but for those vegetarians out there (or those avoiding smoked meats), this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/recipes\/vegetarian-southern-style-collard-greens-recipe-1938261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vegetarian version<\/a> is also top-notch.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dates<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Another seasonal favorite, dates are a fine source of B vitamins, and the minerals magnesium, manganese, and potassium. They\u2019re also sweet and delicious, which means they\u2019re a great fruit to snack on when your sugar cravings are driving you to distraction. Try these healthy <a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/recipe\/9615\/healthy-banana-cookies\/?internalSource=hub%20recipe&amp;referringId=16964&amp;referringContentType=recipe%20hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">date and banana cookies<\/a> next time you\u2019re thinking of reaching for a tube of cookie dough.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Poireaux<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A relative of onions and garlic, leeks have a more delicate flavor that makes them ideal for salads and soups. They\u2019re a good source of vitamins A, B<sub>6<\/sub>, C, and folate, as well as iron and manganese. They\u2019re also a key ingredient in some deliciously simple and healthy recipes, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/eatlittlebird.com\/cream-of-tomato-potato-soup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cream of tomato and potato soup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pears<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are many delicious winter pear varieties: Anjou, Bosc, Comice, and Seckle among them. Like all pears, they\u2019re richer in sugar than in other nutrients, but are also a terrific source of fiber, making them a nutritious snack or dessert. Or think salads, like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/recipe\/249276\/crunchy-pear-celery-salad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crunchy pear and celery<\/a> combination.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pomegranate<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A delicious source of vitamins C, K, and folate, pomegranate seeds take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Open-a-Pomegranate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a little work to remove<\/a>, but they\u2019re worth it. The crunchy, juicy seeds are great on their own, but also make a delicious addition to salads, smoothies, drinks, and dips, like this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marthastewart.com\/1050024\/roasted-red-pepper-and-walnut-dip-pomegranate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roasted red pepper, walnut, and pomegranate dip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sweet Potatoes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A powerhouse source of beta-carotene, sweet potatoes are only distantly related to the potato but can be used in very similar ways, from mashing and baking to delicious seasoned fries. But this versatile vegetable can be used in all sorts of ways, such as these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookinglight.com\/recipes\/thai-sweet-potato-noodle-bowls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thai sweet potato noodle bowls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Navets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Turnips provide food in the form of roots and greens and are close relatives of Brussel sprouts and collard greens, which means they also have a high vitamin K content and that those taking blood-thinning medication should eat cautiously. They\u2019re also rich in vitamins A, C, and folate. While turnip roots and greens are delicious prepared in any number of ways, the plant does contain a chemical that those with a certain gene pair may find intolerably bitter.
