Much has changed in the 21 years since Donna Zirkle\u2019s physician found a lump during her annual breast exam.<\/p>\n

The diagnostic mammogram that followed came back negative. Fortunately, Donna\u2019s doctor didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

\u201cBless my doctor,\u201d Donna said. \u201cShe called me back and said, \u2018Donna, I know there\u2019s a lump there. Would you please<\/em> go get an ultrasound?\u2019 I actually thought about not doing that, but I trusted her. So, I went for the ultrasound, and I saw it on the screen\u2014a little bitty thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donna is one of a small number of patients \u2014 fewer than 10% \u2014 who receive a false negative from a mammogram. Her family physician sent her to see Cam Gabrielsen, then the breast surgeon at Hancock Health. Even Dr. Gabrielsen had his doubts about whether the 1.3cm tumor was cancerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a lumpectomy,\u201d Donna said. \u201cI hadn\u2019t signed off for a mastectomy, because they didn\u2019t think it was going to be cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was. And, three weeks later, she ended up having the mastectomy.<\/p>\n

It turns out Donna\u2019s cancer was aggressive and had already spread to her lymph nodes at the time of her diagnosis. Donna\u2019s age and the aggressive nature of her cancer led her oncologist to recommend two rounds of chemo, one round of radiation, and medication that Donna took every day for a decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the nurses who did my chemo are still here at Hancock in oncology,\u201d Donna said. \u201cI remember them commenting, because I never had a wig. I was bald for nine months, but I would put my hat on with makeup. They said I was the poster child for chemo, because I always came in with such a happy face and a smile. They told me that my attitude probably helped me more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Greenfield native who married her high school sweetheart, Donna appreciates the personalized care she received at Hancock. She still keeps in touch with Sherry Lawrence<\/a>, who continues to work as a Nurse Navigator\u2014guiding patients through their cancer journey at the \u30b9\u30fc\u30fb\u30a2\u30f3\u30fb\u30a6\u30a9\u30fc\u30c8\u30de\u30f3\u304c\u3093\u30bb\u30f3\u30bf\u30fc<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just, it\u2019s family,\u201d she said. \u201cThey saved my life. They\u2019re family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she considers herself a cancer survivor, Donna is careful to never say that she\u2019s cancer-free.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re never cancer-free with breast cancer,\u201d she said. \u201cIt could come back at any time.\u201d That\u2019s why Donna continues to visit an oncologist annually, even though she\u2019s a decade removed from her treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do what they tell me to do,\u201d she said. \u201cI go in to get my annual test. It\u2019s not something I\u2019ve ever forgotten, but I try not to let it be the foremost thing in my mind like I did in those first few years. There are actually days that I don\u2019t think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as advice for patients currently facing cancer, \u201cAttitude means everything,\u201d Donna said. \u201cYou have to trust them. You need a good, trusting relationship with your doctor. I found that. Today, if I would call over there and ask for Sherry, she would get on the phone and talk to me right away. They all remember. They don\u2019t forget you, even though it\u2019s been 21 years since treatment. They don\u2019t forget you.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n
