Hancock Health will host its first Safe@Home class spring 2024. The course is designed to highlight safety and awareness for students in grades 4-6, who might be beginning to stay at home alone for the first time. <\/p>\n<\/div>

“I am excited to offer this to the community as a way for parents and guardians of youth to help ensure confidence for children who may first be beginning to stay home alone, and also bring peace of mind to those caregivers, that their child has the skills necessary to be prepared if uncertain circumstances arise. It is never too soon to have a safety plan,” said Teri House Gottschalk, CCHW, Hancock Health Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\n

Safe@Home is an introduction to safety skills and first aid necessary to prepare students for the responsibility of staying safe when unsupervised. This is a ninety minute class helps to prepare students in grades 4-6 for being safe when home alone. <\/p>\n<\/div>

\n\n<\/div>
\n

Students learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter\u00ae First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. The program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Safe@Home is ideal for students that have expressed interest in assuming the responsibility of staying home alone. Cost of the class is $25\/per student. Minimum 4 students required per class.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Safe@Home does not include instruction on rescue skills, child care skills, or business skills.<\/p>\n<\/div>
